Researching and Educating for Leadership

Discussion Facilitated by Judi Moreillon

Dear Colleagues,

School librarian practitioners and researchers are invited to gather on Thursday, November 14, 2019, from 8:30 to noon to engage in discussions about research in our field.

I have the honor of kicking off the symposium with a brief presentation and a series of discussion questions related to researching and educating school librarians for leadership.

The attached PowerPoint slide deck (.pdf file) provides background for the discussion. It is focused on excerpts from two current seminal studies in our field:

Everhart, Nancy, and Melissa P. Johnston. 2016. “A Proposed Theory of School Librarian Leadership.” School Library Research 19. <http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/aaslpubsandjournals/slr/vol19/SLR_ProposedTheory_V19.pdf> (accessed October 4, 2019).

Johnston, Melissa P., and Lucy Santos Green. 2018. “Still Polishing the Diamond: School Library Research Over the Last Decade.” School Library Research 21. <http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/aaslpubsandjournals/slr/vol21/SLR_StillPolishing_V21.pdf> (accessed October 4, 2019).

I will briefly cite additional current and recent studies as well.

We will review these slides briefly to get to the heart of our meeting: a discussion of researching and educating for leadership.

To prepare: Review the research cited on the Background Information slides.

Practicing School Librarians: Please think about how you currently practice the five roles of the school librarian: leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator. How were you prepared to practice these roles during your preservice education?

Practicing School Librarian Educators: Analyze your current course offerings to determine the primary focus of each course in terms of the five roles of the school librarian. Which roles does your coursework privilege?

School Librarianship Researchers: Analyze your research publications and agenda to determine the primary focus of each course in terms of the five roles of the school librarian. Which roles does your research privilege?

I am looking forward to learning from our robust discussion at the ESLS Research Symposium in Louisville.

Best,

Judi
