Digital ADVOCACY Stories

These examples answer the question: How can school librarians use digital storytelling to advocate for their professional work and the essential role of the school library program in academic and cultural life of the school?

Link to LS5633: Sample Student Wiki with storyboard and script.

Ask Why? by Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) - The interview video asks a recognizable sports figure in the community to testify on behalf of school libraries staffed by professional librarians.

Does Your School Have a Teacher Librarian? A CSLA Film - This video promotes the work of teacher librarians (the term used in California, Canada, and elsewhere), and includes the voices of students, teachers, and administrators as well as school librarians.

Promoting Your School Library by the Australia Library and Information Association - This video includes many specific examples of how school librarians contribute to students' learning and teachers' teaching.

Library Card PSA - Forbes (MA) Library - This video is perfect, in my opinion, - in tone, in length, in "required" content, and in surprises, too!

Principals Know: School Librarians Are the Heart of the School crowd-sourced by Judi Moreillon and Teresa Starrett - This video of principals' and administrators' testimonials was funded by DEMCO, the Texas Library Association, and the Dean's Research Funds, College of Professional Education, Texas Woman's University, Denton.

Teacher Librarians at the Heart of Student Learning- by the Washington Library Media Association - Description: School library and information technology programs are a vital resource for student learning. This video highlights the essential role teacher-librarians play in information and technology literacy instruction, reading advocacy, and information management.

TWU Pioneer School Library - by TWU graduate students in LS5333: School Library Media Center and LS5443: Librarians as Instructional Partners - These advocacy project include various Web 2.0 tools and are targeted to classroom teachers and administrators.

When I Become a Librarian by Wesley Freyer (filmmaker) - This is a tongue-and-cheek presentation that shows the worst in stereotypical school librarian practices.

Other Examples:

Glen Allen High School: Building A Library for Success - This video spotlights the involvement of the school library in the academic program of the school.

Mountaintop Library Expands Horizons: Room to Read - This one-minute video earned the 2011 TechSoup Digital Video Challenge.

Marsh Students Take Back Their Library- This video features the work of middle school library student volunteers in renovating and revitalizing the physical and intellectual space of the library. Mary Virginia Meeks was the librarian at Marsh Middle School in Dallas ISD from 2010 - 2012 (LS5633 student Spring 2012). Mary Virginia created her own video of these events for the course, which later were professionally produced by Advocate photojournalist Danny Fulgencio. The Advocate Web page includes a complete article by Emily Toman.

School Libraries Are... Administrators' Partners for Success! - by Judi Moreillon - This three-minute VoiceThread reaches out for partnerships using narration and images.
